Previous IIT Admission Rule

Candidates who have previously accepted admission into an IIT under programs covered by JoSAA rules are generally not eligible to appear for JEE Advanced again. Certain exceptions may apply, such as candidates admitted to preparatory courses or candidates who withdrew before completion of seat allocation under specified conditions.

Common Reasons for Ineligibility
  • Not qualifying JEE Main cutoff
  • Exceeding maximum attempt limit
  • Failing age eligibility criteria
  • First appearing in Class 12 before permitted years
  • Previous admission to IIT under restricted conditions
  • Incorrect documentation during verification

Eligibility for Droppers

Dropper candidates can apply for JEE Advanced provided they satisfy the attempt limit, age criteria, Class 12 appearance year requirement, and JEE Main qualification criteria. Many successful IIT candidates secure admission during their drop year after improving their JEE Main and JEE Advanced performance.

Admission Eligibility After Qualifying JEE Advanced

Qualifying JEE Advanced alone does not guarantee admission to an IIT. Candidates must participate in JoSAA counselling, satisfy document verification requirements, meet Class 12 board requirements prescribed for IIT admissions, and obtain a valid rank for seat allocation.

Important Note

Eligibility to appear in JEE Advanced and eligibility for IIT admission are related but separate requirements. Candidates must satisfy both examination eligibility and admission criteria.
