11th, NCERT, PAGE NO.- 336 Acromegaly and exophthalmic goitre (also known as Graves' disease) are both disorders caused by the hypersecretion of hormones. Acromegaly occurs when there is an overproduction of growth hormone (GH), usually due to a benign tumor in the pituitary gland. This excess of GH causes abnormal growth of bones and tissues, especially in the hands, feet, and face, leading to the characteristic enlargement of these body parts. On the other hand, exophthalmic goitre is caused by the overproduction of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), typically as a result of an autoimmune condition, where the immune system mistakenly stimulates the thyroid gland. This hyperthyroidism leads to symptoms like bulging eyes (exophthalmos), weight loss, rapid heartbeat, and increased metabolism. Both of these conditions are characterized by the overproduction of hormones.
