What happens to the Km and Vmax in the presence of a competitive inhibitor?
A
Km increases and Vmax remains constant
B
Km decreases and Vmax increases
C
Km decreases and Vmax remains constant
D
Km remains constant and Vmax decreases
Explanation
With the increase in substrate concentration, velocity of the enzyme reaction rises first. The reaction ultimately reaches a maximum velocity Vmax which is not exceeded by any further rise in concentration of substrate. In the presence of malonate as a competitive inhibitor, Km increases but Vmax remains unchanged.
