You are given a tissue with the potential for differentiation in an artificial culture. Which of the following pairs of hormones would you add to the medium to secure shoots as well as roots ?
A
Gibberellin and abscisic acid
B
IAA and gibberellin
C
Auxin and cytokinin
D
Auxin and abscisic acid
Explanation
Auxin and cytokinin are the two hormones that promote cell division and differentiation. Auxin promotes rooting and helps in cell division and xylem differentiation. Cytokinins promote cytokinesis, i.e. cell division and are produced in the regions where rapid cell division occurs. The ratio of cytokinin to auxin is maintained in definite proportion to induce differentiation in callus. Low cytokinin and high auxin promotes root formation and high cytokinin and low auxin concentrations promote shoot differentiation.
