In which phase of mitosis does the nuclear envelope break down?
A
Prometaphase
B
Metaphase
C
Anaphase
D
Telophase
Explanation
The nuclear envelope breaks down at prometaphase (late prophase/early metaphase transition). This allows spindle fibres to access and attach to the kinetochores of chromosomes. The nuclear envelope reforms during telophase. Some textbooks include this in late prophase.
